What is a "Caucus"?

In Washington State, "caucuses" are convened by precincts under the law to do certain work of the political party involved.

In 2012, the caucus will be especially important, due to the fact that thepresidential primary (which previously accounted for about 1/2 the input on the presidential candidate) was cancelled by the State Legislature*. (Previously, this presidential primary was held in February prior to the precinct caucuses: this is not to be confused with the "regular" primary which will take place in August.)

For the Clallam County Republican Party (CCRP), the caucuses have been set for March 3, 2011 across the county.

At that time, all registered voters who considers himself or herself to be a "Republican" can attend their precinct caucus. Attendees are required to sign a form stating that they are Republicans, and that they have not and will not participate in the 2012 caucus or convention system of any other party.

If you have one, bring your voter ID card with you to the caucus to expedite seating at your precinct table.

The purpose of the caucus is five-fold:

1. To elect delegates and alternates to the county convention to represent their precinct. Each precinct is allocated a certain number of delegates and alternates based upon a prescribed formula.

2. To complete a questionnaire about the direction of the Republican Party. The answers are tallied and delivered to the Platform Committee, which is charged with updating the county platform. They are also forwarded to the State for consideration of the State Platform.

3. To participate in a non-binding "strawpoll" to gauge support for the Republican presidential nomination.

4. To discuss issues pertinent to the Republican platforms for the county, state and national Parties, and to

5. To present Resolutions or proposed Amendments to the Platform, (you can read the current platform and resolutions here) which will be forwarded to the Platform Committee, to be incorporated into the proposed Platform and Resolutions to be presented at the County Convention and voted upon there.

--------------------------------------------

*SB 5119, which cancels the 2012 presidential primary by amending RCW 29A.56.020, was signed by Governor Christine "Chris" Gregoire on 13 May 2011. The bill's sponsors were Senators Craig A. Pridemore (Democratic) and Adam Kline. Since the bill expires in 2013, there may be a Presidential Primary in 2016.

December 2011

For the first time, Washington State will not be holding a Presidential Primary election (not to be confused with the "regular" primary, which will still take place in August). Instead, the input toward issues and presidential candidates will be by way of caucuses to be held across the State.

March 3, 2012 is caucus day in Clallam County. All registered Republican voters may attend and participate in the Republican caucus. We are in the process of setting up the locations, and will be updating this site as we get closer.

Prepare to attend your precinct caucus.

1. Be sure you have your voter registration card or photo ID to show at the door when you come into the caucus room.

2. You will be required to sign a statement confirming your Republican affiliation and that you will not be attending any other Parties' caucus or convention.
